Greenland Calls for a ‘Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ To Shed Light on the Forced Sterilization Campaign Waged by Denmark Against Inuit Women: Was it Genocide?

Greenlandic citizens protest forced sterilization

Denmark is under pressure for its decades-long ‘IUD’ campaign.

Against the background of Donald J. Trump’s vows to control the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland, the relationship between Greenland and Denmark is under tremendous stress.

After the publication of two contradictory expert reports, heated debates continue on the nature of the campaign of forced contraception of almost half of Inuit women.

🧵Major developments re: Donald Trump’s designs on Greenland:

Greenland’s official genocide report finds a reasonable basis to believe Denmark violated the Genocide Convention by implanting Greenlandic girls with birth-control devices without consent.

Le Monde reported (translated from the French):

“Did Denmark commit genocide against the Greenlandic people between 1960 and the 1990s? […] On Friday 28 August, two expert reports, made public by the Greenlandic government, were supposed to provide the beginning of an answer. But their divergent conclusions have caused even more confusion.”

It’s estimated that over 4,000 Greenlandic women were affected, starting as young as 12 and 13 years old.

“Breaking the silence, some of them recount the trauma they felt when the IUD was inserted into their uterus. Many say they did not give their consent. This forced sterilization will have serious consequences. Some have infections and become sterile. Others repress the memory and discover, years later during a medical examination, the presence of this contraceptive that prevents them from having children.”

The birth rate in Greenland, then the highest in the world, collapsed from the 1970’s onward.

“The Social Democrats of Siumut and the nationalists of Naleraq demand that Denmark be brought before an international court. For her part, the Minister of Health, Mariane Paviasen, said that she could not ‘affirm, on behalf of the government, that there was genocide’ and that the debate should continue.

The Greenlandic government, on the other hand, is proposing to set up a reconciliation commission. Not to ‘assign responsibility’, but to ‘shed light on the truth from a perspective of reconciliation’, explained Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.”

Denmark’s Parliament overwhelmingly approved compensation for Greenlandic women and girls who had IUDs inserted without their consent or without adequate informed consent.
