A New York democratic socialist congressional candidate has claimed she is focused on the general election while travelling to Uruguay to meet with fellow leftists.

During a recent interview with a radio station in Uruguay, Darializa Avila Chevalier said, “Right now, I’m very focused on my general election in November and making sure we’re showing people that we can change lives in material ways.”

However, New York City socialist congressional candidates Chevalier and Claire Valdez are currently in Uruguay, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

“The Democratic Socialists of America members, who beat more establishment-oriented rivals in the June Democratic primaries, will attend the Pan-American Congress in Montevideo, Uruguay over the weekend along with a congressional delegation including progressives Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Rep. Chuy Garcia (D-IL),” the outlet said.

Chevalier also claimed during the radio appearance that socialism means gangs such as the Black Panthers and the Young Lords handing out food and cleaning up garbage when government officials fail to do so:

Chevalier also claimed Americans who voted for President Donald Trump were ready to embrace socialism, and Breitbart News pointed out her comments were “based on a focus group of BIDEN voters that then went for Trump over Kamala in 2024 (she doesn’t mention the context of their 2020 votes).”

In regard to the focus group, NPR reported August 13 that “some swing voters might not be quick to reject socialist political candidates.”

“NPR observed two online focus groups of Nevada voters on Tuesday night, and 10 of the 12 participants said they wouldn’t automatically think negatively of a politician who identifies with the left-wing ideology. The voters, who supported Joe Biden in 2020 and then cast ballots for Donald Trump in 2024, had a mix of political affiliations — six self-described independents, four Republicans and two Democrats,” the article read.

Chevalier has hyped communism, Marxism, and Soviet figures online but has since deleted those posts, Breitbart News reported in June.

“The Mamdani-backed candidate who defeated Democrat Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) in New York’s primary race has made headlines for her radical positions. For example, she stands as the co-founder of an organization that claims to fight for the ‘total eradication of Western civilization,’ as Breitbart News detailed,” the outlet said.
