President Donald Trump announced that the United States would be allowing 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported into the country, lifting tariffs on the product for 90 days.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump noted that under the Biden administration, “beef prices soared at their fastest rate” and added that the American beef herd decreased “to its smallest size.” Trump also noted that by allowing 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported for 90 days with no tariffs, it would help to “reduce prices for Americans” while also allowing the beef herd to grow in the U.S.

“Today, I concluded a deal to substantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families,” Trump said. “As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history.”

Trump continued to share that in an effort to help rebuild the American beef herd and help ranchers out, “for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff.”

“We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices,” Trump continued. “This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again.”

Trump’s post comes as data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on the website for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis shows that as of July 2026, the average price for 100 percent ground beef in the U.S. is roughly $6.88.

The Hill reported that Trump’s announcement would “likely anger the cattle industry as more imported beef makes its way into the country.”

In a post on X, Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) expressed that he had warned Trump “against this course of action,” adding that ranchers in the U.S. “have been struggling against the packer monopoly for decades.”

“I’ve advised President Trump against this course of action for a year because American ranchers have been struggling against the packer monopoly for decades, and this will further harm them — most of whom are MAGA Republicans,” Sheehy wrote. “The President’s heart is in the right place on wanting lower prices for the American people, and beef prices have been impacted by the Mexican screwworm.”

Sheehy continued to warn that Trump’s announcement would “make it more difficult for American ranchers to rebuild our herd and bring prices down for the American people.”

“Most importantly, this will harm our ranching families who feed the nation,” Sheehy continued.
