A mother standing for election for Germany’s centrist-right Christian Democrats has caused a stir by wearing a favourite necklace containing what some say is a vulgar acronym.
38-year-old mother of one Corinna Jodeit says her local Christian Democrat Union (CDU) party is standing behind her after a minor controversy went nationwide over her election posters, which show her wearing a small golden “MILF” necklace.
A phrase which entered the popular vocabulary with the release of American Pie in 1999, Urban Dictionary states the acronym stands for “Mother I’d Like to Fuck”, referring to an attractive mature woman of no blood relation to the observer.
Jodeit is standing for the CDU to get a seat on Wildeshausen council, a city near Bremen in Lower Saxony. Local elections are slated to take place in the region in September.
German broadsheet Die Welt notes while some comment about the necklace was critical, there were also many expressing support.
Jodeit, who describes herself as a “solutions-oriented entrepreneur” who loves to sleep in, is reported to have said that while some of the negative comments had bothered her, she was standing by her candidacy and the necklace, and her party — a usually staid legacy party of the right — was supporting her campaign.
“I enjoy being a m0ther”, she said, arguing it would be “inauthentic” to take off a necklace she’d worn regularly for some ten years to present an airbrushed version of herself just for election time.
Ultimately, she said, the criticism wasn’t about the necklace at all, but was intended to reduce the possibility of a centre-right candidate winning a seat at city council with any ammunition at hand at all.
