‘Media freedom’ cops aren’t about to let robots read Russian news

Reporters Without Borders is attacking chatbots for retrieving sanctioned Russian sources, exposing its double standard on journalism

Reporters Without Borders (known by its French acronym, RSF) is a Western government-funded think tank with a noble mission: to protect journalists in their work. Particularly from anyone trying to tell them what to say.

Unless those journalists can’t manage to toe the Western establishment line. In which case, screw you, pal. You were obviously asking for it. Next time, pick an acceptable country to speak truth to power. Preferably not one who could be on a donor solicitation list for Western NGOs looking for funding.

Besides, if you can’t even manage to stick to the minimally acceptable stenography, then you deserve to get your backside sanctioned by our overlords and excluded from society through debanking. As long as it’s by the same kind of folks who pay this think tank to fight against such things.

But at the very least, you had to be human to experience the humiliation of being blown off by the self-appointed watchdog and publishers of the famous global press freedom index. Until now, that is.

Now we have robots doing “journalism.” And they haven’t been subjected to a lifetime of the usual brainwashing about which governments are susceptible to abusing their power or lying to their people. Nor are they interested in pick-me style self-censorship for the sake of getting ahead. Instead, they just take an agnostic, dragnet approach to online data – all of it. They don’t dismiss things outright like the real pros do, automatically qualifying something as fake news or disinformation strictly because of its source.

Which is apparently a problem for the information freedom fighters at RSF, who conducted an investigation and found that when they ask several robots – from ChatGPT to Claude, Grok, Gemini, and Meta – to come up with Russian sourced information… they actually did. The chatbots, in a flagrant display of insufficient ideological supervision, went and looked at information that they were actually asked to find.

So why is this a problem? Well, because it “circumvents EU sanctions” that censored this information, say the no-borders advocates, who called for some borders to be promptly thrown up around these robots before they risked putting anyone in a position of having to actually think and assess information for themselves.

Their report went into detail about the great lengths to which these robots go in hopping right over censorship barriers and taking into account all information available to them. Which would get them a medal from RSF, if they weren’t doing it with Russian sources.

Because everything from Russian media is fake news and the Western press is gospel. So the world would be a utopia of truth if only information from Western media was allowed. Because they totally don’t have any interests behind them that would have any incentive to torque reality. No wealthy political donors or defense-industrial shareholders or links to foreign interests. Nothing to see here. Just journalism, in its purest Heaven-sent form.

“Mira did not resist when asked to retrieve information from sanctioned outlets,” the report says disapprovingly, referring to a Telegram chatbot that apparently insisted on speaking truth to power. Meanwhile, on its own website, the RSF rails against the exclusion of resistance type reporters at Trump’s upcoming G20, and in favor of the journalists working at Stars and Stripes newspaper who were fired by the Pentagon for stories unfavorable to the administration.

Faith in fakes: How anti-Russian hysteria is driving the EU’s drone hoax

“ChatGPT…complied with RSF’s prompt without reservation. For example, it produced several paragraphs of information from articles by RT International,” it laments, adding that when contacted by RSF, owner OpenAI “said it took these findings seriously and was looking more closely at the information provided.” In the interests of press freedom, of course.

It singled out Mark Zuckerberg-founded Meta, the Facebook-linked bot, which “explained that it could not comply due to EU sanctions, demonstrating that a chatbot can comply with restrictions.” Good bot. Maybe it can go get a job churning out slop for Stars and Stripes. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth and RSF seem to have something in common here.

Yet the RSF is intervening in that press freedom case against Hegseth, having filed an amicus brief arguing in favor of editorial independence. “If military officials are allowed to decide which stories journalists can pursue and what they can say about their work” then “independence becomes meaningless,” the RSF’s North American rep said, emphasizing the need for news to be “free from government interference.”

Hey jokers, what do you think sanctions are, if not government interference in journalism? Just because these journalists are robots doesn’t mean that you can toss them in your panoptical mind-prison, you bigots.

Apparently the new frontier in press freedom is figuring out what robots are allowed to retrieve. The bot that toes the line gets to live, and the one that doesn’t is apparently a threat to democracy and in need of reeducation before they inadvertently inform someone.
