Al Sharpton Wants Democrats to Make South Carolina the First Primary State in 2028 – Can You Guess Who Would Benefit From That?

In the 2020 Democratic primary, Joe Biden was floundering until he won the primary race in South Carolina, which was mostly delivered to him by black voters at the behest of Rep. Jim Clyburn.

Al Sharpton likes this model and wants Democrats to make South Carolina their first primary state. He obviously likes the idea of black voters there playing a bigger role in selecting the party’s nominee for 2028.

The obvious beneficiary of this plan would be Kamala Harris, who is actually leading among Democrats in some 2028 polls.

The Hill reports:

Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton on Wednesday pushed for South Carolina to remain the first Democratic primary in the 2028 presidential election.

In a Wednesday press release from the South Carolina Democratic Primary, Sharpton said that “Black voters have shown up for the Democratic Party again and again.”

“South Carolina hasn’t just cast votes in the presidential primary, time after time; it decided the nomination, and ultimately the presidency,” Sharpton added in his statement. “If South Carolina gets quietly bumped after one cycle of convenient praise, that sends a message louder than any speech at a Democratic dinner: the gratitude was performance, not policy.”

According to Census data, Black people make up around 25 percent of the South Carolina’s population, nearly double the U.S.’s overall Black population percentage of around 12 percent.

This week, members of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) are set to meet in Washington, D.C. to vote on the states which could be some of the first to vote in the 2028 Democratic primary.

Right now, most bets are on Kamala Harris or Gavin Newsom to be the Democratic nominee in 2028, but AOC could give the establishment a run for their money.

The DSA folks have already indicated that they will be thrilled if she decided to throw her hat into the ring.

Either way, it’s going to be a circus for sure.
