Zelensky Dismisses Ambassador to the U.S. Olga Stefanishyna, Investigated by the Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Agencies

Corruption probe sealed Stefanishyna’s fate.

The troublesome government reshuffle that Volodymyr Zelensky is implementing in his Kiev regime is still ongoing.

While most of the attention has been devoted to Zelensky’s firing of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov – and subsequently of Commander-in-Chief General Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukrainian press has reported since the start that the reason for the shakeup was the Ambassador to the US, Olga Stefanishyna.

So, yesterday (3), as expected, Zelensky dismissed Stefanishyna.

And the reason why, that the AFP report tried to hide in the next-to-last paragraph: “According to Ukrainian media, Stefanishyna is under investigation by the country’s anti-corruption agency on suspicion of wrongdoing, although she has not been formally accused.

[…] In a Facebook post in which she also posted a letter asking to be relieved of her duties, Stefanishyna said the decision was her own and ‘dictated by personal circumstances’.”

Reuters reported:

“Stefanishyna had ‌been in her job for nearly a year. Her departure had been expected for several weeks.

[…] Stefanishyna said on Facebook that she would address other questions about her circumstances that have arisen in the media.

Ukrainian media outlets said she had informed the president of her intention to leave her post last month. The reports referred to long-running investigations into alleged irregularities in her asset declaration.”

It’s a ‘moving’ attempt by Reuters to minimize the seriousness of the charges, like it’s a mere problem filing a form, or something like that.

But the reality is quite different:

1 – Lukash case – Stefanishyna helped organize studies adapting Ukrainian law to EU norms. The work cost Ukraine about UAH 2.5 million at inflated per-page rates.

She received a notice of suspicion for alleged large-scale embezzlement/misappropriation.

2 – Anti-corruption agencies NABU/SAPO examine links of her circle — including her ex-husband — to mismanagement of ARMA-seized assets such as the Trade Unions House.

There’s also questions of illicit enrichment and undeclared or undervalued family real estate.

It’s not just a matter of a clerical error.

Politico reported:

“The investigations concern a decade-old 2.5-million-hryvnia (€49,000) embezzlement case at the justice ministry, the illegal acquisition of Ukrainian state property by Stefanishyna’s ex-husband, and a lavish apartment in central Kyiv registered to her parents that Stefanishyna did not declare until journalists discovered it.”

Kyiv Post reported that the ambassador acknowledged ‘an attempt to bring charges’ against her, described it as ‘an absolutely normal process’ and -incredibly – argued that ‘everyone in the president’s inner circle is suspected of many things’.”
