The University of Michigan has announced it will no longer provide hormones or puberty blockers to minors who claim to be “transgender,” citing a federal subpoena as part of a broader Department of Justice investigation into these harmful practices.
The decision is a significant win for child protection advocates who have long warned about the irreversible damage of such treatments.
In a statement announcing the new policy, the university said:
The University of Michigan, including Michigan Medicine, is one of multiple institutions across the country that has received a federal subpoena as part of a criminal and civil investigation into gender-affirming care for minors. In light of that investigation, and given escalating external threats and risks, we will no longer provide gender affirming hormonal therapies and puberty blocker medications for minors.
We recognize the gravity and impact of this decision for our patients and our community. We are working closely with all those impacted, and we will continuously support the well-being of our patients, their families, and our teams.
We are deeply grateful to our clinicians for their unyielding commitment to providing the highest quality care, and to all of our team members for their dedication to helping our patients, and to supporting each other, as we navigate these changes together.
This action follows a July DOJ announcement that over 20 subpoenas were issued to clinics and physicians involved in conducting transgender medical procedures on children.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi pulled no punches, stating, “Medical professionals and organizations that mutilated children in the service of a warped ideology will be held accountable by this Department of Justice.”
The investigation is part of a larger crackdown under the Trump administration, which has prioritized protecting minors from experimental gender interventions.
In June, the University of Pennsylvania health system stopped performing “gender-affirming” surgeries on minors, citing federal directives and a Trump executive order.
Yale Medicine ended its pediatric gender medication program over the summer, also due to federal pressure and executive actions.
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has also ceased providing transgender procedures for minors, complying with federal and state mandates.
