Married for 37 years and approaching retirement, Dorsie and Dan Schmitz found themselves worried about U.S. politics and their own finances. They owned a large house on a 31-acre spread, in the rural, no-stoplight town of Blanchard, Michigan (population 3,100), an hour north of Grand Rapids.
