President Trump Takes Aim At Senate Majority Leader John Thune As Thune Continues To Resist SAVE America Act

At a recent rally in Marietta, Georgia, President Donald Trump intensified his pressure campaign on Senate Majority Leader John Thune, making passage of the SAVE America Act the centerpiece of his speech. Trump told the crowd, “We have to pass the SAVE America Act to defend American elections,” praising Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans while lamenting that “we’re having a hard time in the Senate.”

He warned that “it’s like the Senate is a place where you send things when you want them to die” and declared, “We’re not going to take this any longer… I’m trying to be nice.” Urging a direct grassroots campaign, Trump said, “Everybody call John Thune at the Senate, he’s the leader of the Republican party, and tell him to get this stuff approved,” a line that has since ricocheted across social media clips of the rally.

The president coupled that appeal with renewed calls to “terminate the filibuster,” warning that Democrats would nuke the 60-vote threshold to admit Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., as states and gain “like 40 electoral votes” if Republicans do not act first.

Appearing on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Thune responded that while Trump is “passionate” about the SAVE America Act, “the votes are not there to do it” when it comes to abolishing the legislative filibuster. Thune explained that Republicans had already held “multiple votes” on provisions such as photo ID and citizenship requirements, recounting that Trump’s team met with about 20 GOP senators and that “15 were a no on getting rid of the filibuster.”

“We don’t have 50 votes for it today,” Thune told Hannity, adding that many Republicans see eliminating the filibuster as “a hard position” and insisting that “the votes aren’t there to do it” despite the president’s pressure. Thune has also pushed back in Capitol Hill interviews, telling reporters that instead of blaming Republicans, the White House should “get on the phone and get the votes,” underscoring that Senate GOP leaders currently lack the support to nuke the filibuster to pass the SAVE America Act.
