Swedish police shot a suspected swordsman after an attack on a secondary school on Friday that has left at least two people seriously injured.
A man, believed to be a former student, entered Brinell high school in Fagersta, Västmanland County Sweden with a sword on Friday afternoon and started to attack students. Police were alerted around 2pm local time and shot a suspect in the leg before arresting him.
Witnesses cited by local media say they heard several shots from the school.
Police declined to say how many were injured in the course of the attack, but a local hospital has confirmed they have received two seriously injured teenagers for emergency treatment, with others in less serious states said to be following, reports Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. There are no reported fatalities.
The suspect is a former student, reported to be 18-years-old and with a former conviction for assault and a history of “mental illness”. The man’s home in the town was raided by police shortly after the attack.
Police said after the arrest of the suspect, they believed there was no further risk to the public but they asked people to keep away from the scene and to observe road closures. Officers further said their investigation was underway, and there was a large number of witnesses from the school to interview, and security footage to review.
Brinell high school was evacuated in May over a threat made against it. Police are considering whether this, and a recent series of posts on social media, may be linked to today’s attacks.
