One woman in Oprah’s Massachusetts studio said the thing the rest of the room did not want to hear: Lindsay Clancy is a murderer.
Cora Clancy was 5. Dawson was 3. Baby Callan was 8 months old.
Their mother, Lindsay Clancy, strangled them with exercise bands in the basement of the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on January 24, 2023. Then she slashed herself and jumped from a second-story window. She is paralyzed from the waist down. She has never disputed that she killed the children. A Massachusetts jury hung last week. Prosecutors say they will retry her.
That is the case Oprah Winfrey turned into a sympathy hour.
On the new episode of The Oprah Podcast, titled “The Lindsay Clancy Case, Understanding Postpartum Psychosis,” Winfrey sat in Massachusetts with experts, women who say they lived through postpartum psychosis, and a studio audience already primed to treat the woman who killed those three kids as the victim.
The Gateway Pundit reported Thursday that the same taping erupted in applause when Dr. Kameelah Phillips demanded “pink shirts and the energy” for black mothers who kill their children.
“I want us to have the same passion for people who don’t look like Lindsay, who don’t have the same access… her education, her melanin, her privilege,” Phillips said.
“There are women of color sitting around this country in prisons for the same thing we never heard of. I just wanna remind us to have the pink shirts and the energy for them as well.”
Brittney, who does not have children, sat beside her mom, Jocelyn. They disagreed. Jocelyn said Brittney couldn’t understand because she had never given birth.
“I feel like I’m not with the majority right now. I do believe she’s a murderer,” she said.
Oprah cut in: “From all you’ve heard today, you still—”
Brittney did not back down. She said she supports mental-health awareness but questioned how anyone could excuse the deaths of three innocent children.
She also said the deaths were not instant. They were not gunshots. Clancy strangled her children three separate times with exercise bands.
Brittney: “It’s just unfortunate. [My mom] so quick to say it like, “You’ve never had a baby. You don’t understand what it’s like to go through all the hormonal shifts.”
But I just feel as though these were not instant deaths. They weren’t gunshots to the head. She was there strangling her kids three times. Mm-hmm. You’re telling me, even after the first time, she couldn’t snap out of it? You’re watching the life leave your kids’ eyes, you know?
So, I know I hear everybody’s opinions, and God bless mothers, but at the same— I just don’t understand how we can empathize with somebody that— They weren’t strangers. They were her kids and she was able to grab those exercise bands. That took a lot of effort.”
Brittany warned that Clancy was being turned into a “mascot” for a movement, with some supporters transforming a horrific crime into a symbol of female mental-health advocacy.
“I feel like, with her, she’s becoming a mascot. I feel like so many mothers empathize with her so much that they want to put her out there and make her a mascot, and they’re turning something so negative into a movement.”
