The annual marijuana “holiday” — 4/20 — takes place this weekend on Easter Sunday and marijuana retailers across Michigan are offering deals on product — and some big givaways — to celebrate.
Marijuana has been legal for recreational use in Michigan since 2018, causing the industry to explode with $3 billion in both recreational and medical marijuana sales in 2024.
Now, on weed lovers’ favorite holiday, retailers are rolling out deals on pre-rolls, flower and food in Michigan. One retailer is even offering a new car, while you can win $5,000 through another Michigan vendor.
“4/20” refers to April 20. The date has come to be known as the stoner holiday on which marijuana smokers celebrate their love of bud.
The holiday’s origins can be traced back to a group of high schoolers who invited others to smoke weed on April 20, 1990, at 4:20 p.m., USA TODAY said.
Almost 35 years later, Michiganders still celebrate the unofficial holiday.
With 4/20 falling on the Christian holiday of Easter, many retailers are offering deals the day before, on April 19. Here’s where to find events, food and deals across the state:
How did ‘420’ become code for marijuana?
While no one can say for certain, one widely accepted origin traces back to a group of teenagers hanging out after school, USA TODAY reported.
In the early ’70s, five students at San Rafael High School in Marin County, California would meet outside of the school after extracurricular activities had ended for the day. The group, eventually called the “Waldos,” simply for the fact they met by a wall to do their thing, made their official meeting time 4:20 p.m. and eventually started using 420 as code for smoking.
One of the Waldo members, Dave Reddix, later got work as a roadie for the Grateful Dead, and the band helped to popularize the term, he told Time. Specifically, a flyer distributed by a group of Oakland Deadheads in December 1990 inviting people to smoke on April 20 at 4:20 p.m. did the trick.
A reporter at High Times magazine got hold of the flier and printed it in 1991, bringing it to the attention of cannabis fans across state lines. The magazine continued to use the term in future publications, solidifying its place in popular vernacular.
Kalamazoo event features concert, weed samples
Inspectah Deck, of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan along with a collection of regional and local hip hop artists will headline “Secret Garden Festival”, a 4/20 weekend event, although the event will take place a day before on April 19.
Vendors won’t be selling cannabis, but may have samples, according to reporting from M-Live.
