A community forum will focus on the importance of judicial independence in American democracy, and during the event, the public will hear from two candidates running for judge of the York County Court of Common Pleas.

The forum and candidate conversation will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 13 in the Weinstock Lecture Hall at York College of Pennsylvania, according to a news release from the York County Bar Association. It is free to the public – though registration in advance is required.

Dr. Nicholas Anspach, York College professor of political science and director of the Arthur J. Glatfelter Institute for Public Policy, will talk about the essential role of the judiciary and the checks and balances that are important to democracy in the United States. He will examine the recent federal court cases and their impact on the rest of the country, the release states.

York County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Maria Musti Cook and retired Judge John C. Uhler will offer their perspectives as well on upholding justice and democratic principles.

Judicial candidates

Two well-known local attorneys — Chris Ferro and Paul Minnich — are running for two seats on the York County Court of Common Pleas in the May 20 primary. They will participate in a question-and-answer session after the main program.

Scott Fisher, Central Pennsylvania regional editor for the USA Today Network, which includes the York Daily Record, the Hanover Evening Sun and the Lebanon Daily News, will serve as moderator. Kevin Schreiber, former state representative and CEO of the York County Economic Alliance, will offer introductions.

The event is presented by the York County Bar Association.
