One point. That’s all Liverpool needs from its match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday to secure the Premier League title. Arne Slot’s team has led the title race for the full season, but this weekend could be when expectation turns to celebration at Anfield. It is shaping up to be a memorable afternoon.

Few predicted Liverpool would run away with the title when Slot arrived as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement last summer. In fact, many envisaged there would be a drop-off from the Reds as they moved on from their most legendary, beloved manager of the modern era. Instead, Liverpool has improved.

Mohamed Salah has enjoyed the best season of his entire career. Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have both contributed more than in any other campaign as Liverpool players. Ryan Gravenberch has been transformed as a two-way valve in the centre of the pitch. Alexis Mac Allister has thrived alongside him.

Liverpool’s players are the ones who have put the Reds at the top of the Premier League table, but title glory would be proof of how the Anfield outfit is the best-run club in English soccer. Faced with the circumstances of last summer, other teams would have crumbled. Liverpool, on the other hand, used it as a chance to grow further.

Across the pitch, Liverpool has the sort of squad depth that other clubs can only dream of. In midfield, Slot has several options to deploy in a variety of different ways depending on the situation. Harvey Elliott, for example, has made an impact off the bench in several matches this season. Curtis Jones has also been useful.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure at the end of the season would give Liverpool something to consider, but Conor Bradley is ready to step up as his long-term successor. Slot has already used the Northern Irish right back in countless games this season. Liverpool wouldn’t even need to enter the transfer market to replace Alexander-Arnold.

Darwin Nunez could be moved on in the summer transfer window. The Uruguayan centre forward is seemingly too inconsistent for Slot’s liking and so Liverpool could target a new striker for the start of next season. Elsewhere, though, the Reds are in a strong position to repeat their title success of the current campaign.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is the target of criticism from some supporters who believe it could spend more freely in the transfer market. However, Liverpool is on the brink of a second Premier League title in four years and is well-placed to enjoy a period of dominance at the top of English soccer. Its owners deserve credit, not criticism.
