The Log Cabin Republicans announced Thursday that it is dropping transgender advocacy and will now focus only on lesbian, gay, and bisexual issues.

“From the start, Log Cabin Republicans grounded its advocacy in constitutional principles — equal protection, limited government, and individual freedom.”

The group’s board approved the change more than a decade after the organization expanded its mission to include transgender causes.

In 2015, the Log Cabin Republicans Board of Directors voted to add the “T” under the umbrella of our mission — out of a belief that all adults should be allowed to pursue their own happiness, free of government interference, as long as it did not impede on the inalienable rights of others.

At the time, we did not believe that we would find ourselves where we are today. The transgender movement has ceased focusing on adults at all — nearly all of their efforts and those of their aligned special interest groups focus on minors. They push schools to teach radical gender ideology; they want biological men in women’s sports regardless of the consequences; perhaps most offensively, they support gender reassignment treatments for minors, often without the knowledge or consent of the parents, knowing full well these treatments are mostly irreversible.

The organization’s board therefore voted to limit its national work to sexual orientation and conservative principles, formally identifying the group as an “LGB advocacy organization.”

Its priorities will include same-sex marriage, adoption, military service, religious freedom, and equal protection under the law.

“This decision reaffirms our core mission,” said Hemminger. “We have fought for the right to marry who we love, serve our country openly, and enjoy the same rights afforded to all Americans.”

The shift will not affect who can join the organization. Membership will remain available to conservatives, including transgender people.

The Log Cabin Republicans backed President Donald Trump in the 2020 and 2024 elections after withholding its endorsement in 2016.

Trump has opposed sex-change procedures for children and transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. His administration has also sought to remove transgender service members from the military.
