‘King of porn’ football club co-owner advised against visiting home matches

Billionaire David Sullivan has vigorously denied allegations made against him in the British media

English football club West Ham Utd co-owner David Sullivan, dubbed ‘King of porn,’ should avoid visiting the team’s home matches, the London Stadium’s administration has said, citing new allegations of sexual exploitation.

Sullivan, 77, earned his nickname making his fortune from porn in the era before the internet: selling magazines, films, erotic phone calls and other adult products. One of Britain’s richest men, he took over West Ham in 2010 together with a group of co-investors.

In June, BBC Panorama and The Times released an investigation, in which seven women accused Sullivan of “sexually exploitative and predatory behavior.” They claimed that models had been offered spots as “regular girls” in the billionaire’s tabloids in exchange for having sex with him and were warned that their careers would suffer if they refused.

Sullivan resigned as West Ham’s director and joint chairman shortly before the investigation was aired, saying that he wanted to fully focus on fighting what he described as “factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations.” The Athletic, owned by the New York Times, has also reported that the mogul was open to selling his 38.9% stake in the club.

West Ham’s home arena, the London Stadium, which is publicly owned, said in a statement on Monday that “given the potential for demonstrations and anti-social behavior by some spectators,” it doesn’t recommend Sullivan to attend his team’s matches.

“We have also requested advance notice of any planned attendance so that appropriate safety and operational measures can be put in place,” it added.

London Stadium would not comment on if West Ham had informed them whether Sullivan will be attending.

The administration of the 62,500-seat area issued the advice despite acknowledging that the club itself “does not consider there to be an ongoing safeguarding risk” associated with the billionaire coming to the stands.

Under Sullivan, West Ham played 15 seasons in the English Premier League, with its best result being sixth spot in 2020/21. The London club also won the UEFA Conference League in 2022/23.

However, in May, the team was relegated from the top division to the EFL Championship. West Ham kicks off the new season with a Carabao Cup game against Portsmouth at the London Stadium on Saturday.
