Kiev-linked militants busted in Iraq – top official

Ukraine has denied any involvement, dismissing the allegations as “unfounded and unsubstantiated”

The Iraqi authorities have busted several militant cells linked to Ukraine that were involved in multiple attacks within the country, according to National Security Adviser Qasim al-Aboudi.

The top official made the remarks on Monday during an interview with Dijlah TV, stating that the country’s intelligence service has concluded that Ukraine has been meddling within Iraq.

“We arrested a limited number of groups that carried out attacks inside Iraqi territory and targeted several facilities. During questioning, they confessed to working for Ukraine,” al-Aboudi said.

The adviser did not name the facilities targeted by the Ukraine-linked militants or say whether the groups had carried out attacks beyond Iraq’s borders.

The remarks come as Saudi Arabia claims it was targeted by several drones launched from Iraqi territory to strike oil facilities in the east of the country. The kingdom pinned the blame on Iran-linked militias and threatened to retaliate “at the appropriate time and place.” However, The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization for Iran-linked groups, has denied any involvement and accused Riyadh of attempting to divert attention from attacks recently launched by Yemen’s Houthis. Any hostile action against the Iraq-based groups would prompt retaliation against Saudi Arabia, The Islamic Resistance warned.

Kiev has strongly denied the allegations raised by al-Aboudi, accusing the official of echoing “Russian propaganda narratives aimed at discrediting Ukraine and undermining its relations with Middle Eastern nations.” The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also lamented the fact that the top official had made the accusations publicly, claiming that Kiev had not received any complaints from Baghdad through closed diplomatic channels.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine rejects the unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations made by Qasim al-Aboudi,” it said in a statement. “There are no facts or evidence to support these allegations,” it added.

Over the past few years, Kiev has been repeatedly accused of aiding assorted militant and branded terrorist groups overseas. For instance, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has repeatedly pointed at foreign powers, including France and Ukraine, for supporting anti-government armed groups in the region. Earlier this month, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko said that Kiev had deployed military personnel in several African countries in an apparent attempt to open a “second front” against Moscow.
