French streamers sentenced over death broadcast

The pair were convicted of violence and incitement to hatred but cleared of causing the victim’s demise

Two French livestreamers have received suspended prison sentences for repeatedly abusing and humiliating a man during online broadcasts before his death.

A criminal court in Nice found Safine Hamadi and Owen Cenazandotti guilty of violence against 46-year-old Raphael Graven, known online as Jean Pormanove, as well as incitement to hatred over insults directed at him.

Graven died on August 18, 2025, while the streamers were asleep during a live broadcast. Prosecutors later said his death was probably linked to poor health and a fragile heart rather than the abuse itself.

The abuse was streamed on the Kick platform over several days. The defendants maintained that the violence and humiliation had been scripted, partly staged and carried out with Graven’s consent.

Hamadi, who expressed remorse during the trial, received an 18-month suspended sentence and a €5,000 ($5,770) fine. Cenazandotti was given a two-year suspended sentence and fined €15,000.

Both men were also banned from posting on social media for six months.

“The conviction is mainly symbolic. We are satisfied with the ruling,” said Hamadi’s lawyer, Tom Michel. He added that his client had acknowledged that some of the content was unacceptable and could not be justified as consensual or scripted.

The court cleared the pair of manslaughter and of exploiting Graven’s psychological frailty. According to Michel, Graven had previously told police that he had consented to the stunts.

The case caused widespread outrage in France after clips circulated on social media showing Graven subjected to beatings, humiliation, and degrading challenges over a period of months. Viewers could reportedly pay to encourage some of the stunts, turning the abuse into a lucrative form of entertainment.

The scandal intensified after it emerged that the channel had already been reported to the authorities dozens of times and that Kick had actively promoted some of its content. French Digital Affairs Minister Clara Chappaz described Graven’s treatment as an “absolute horror.”

Kick faced further criticism after briefly restoring public access to the channel following his death. French regulators said the platform employed only 75 moderators, none of whom spoke French, raising broader questions about its ability to police violent content.

French audiovisual regulator Arcom and the Paris prosecutor’s office had opened investigations into the Australia-based platform. Arrest warrants have also reportedly been issued for some of its management.

Prosecutors said Graven earned around €265,000 from his streams between 2021 and 2025.
