Safe and affordable housing is a significant issue in the city of Erie.

Citizens are invited to share their housing-related experiences at an April 26 event hosted by local social justice organization Erie County United.

The Housing Town Hall is scheduled to begin at noon at the Booker T. Washington Center, 1720 Holland St. The event is free, but those seeking to register in advance can do so by visiting bit.ly/ecuhousing.

The town hall will give citizens a chance to talk about rising rents, landlords and their living conditions, among other topics.

Housing affordability is a major concern in Erie, where 48% of the nearly 45,000 housing units are rentals and more than 25% of the city’s residents live below federal poverty guidelines, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The median market-rate rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Erie is currently $800, according to Zumper.com, a nationwide real estate platform.

Erie Refocused, the city’s comprehensive, multiyear development plan, pushes for various initiatives focused on creating affordable housing, addressing blight, improving the condition of the city’s housing stock and fortifying neighborhoods.
