DEARBORN, MICHIGAN — Abdul El-Sayed is trying to cast a big tent as the Democratic civil war rages around him. If he wins his Senate primary tonight over Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), it will likely be because he attracted some normie Democrats to his cause — even if that’s not how he’d describe them.
“I don’t know what a normie Democrat is,” he told POLITICO at a polling place at Salina Intermediate School in Dearborn. “I think most Democrats want to see money out of politics, money in your pocket, and Medicare for all. I think this factional thing that we’re talking about just is not consistent with what I’ve been hearing on the ground for the better part of 15 months where I’ve traveled. People are sick and tired of not being able to afford their groceries or pay their rent or believe they could ever own a home. I think that’s true of all Democrats.”
He added that frustration crossed party lines — and predicted a solid general-election win in the swing state as a result: “Frankly, I think that’s true of Republicans, which is why I’m going to beat Mike Rogers by seven.”
