Kamala Harris to join Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan next week

Kamala Harris will join Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s open Senate seat, next week, marking her latest involvement in the midterm elections.

This comes as the former vice president — who lost Michigan in 2024 to President Donald Trump — announces more campaign appearances alongside Democrats, including Sen. Jon Ossoff in Georgia.

Harris has not yet said if she will be running for president in 2028.

“I’m just really looking forward to having her here, and she is somebody who so many folks in communities like Detroit look up to as an inspirational leader,” El-Sayed told POLITICO in an interview on Wednesday.

He added, “I’m grateful that she’s coming in and having conversations about what it takes to get the turnout up, so that we can get on to working on some of these issues in the U.S. Senate.”

The pair will have a roundtable about maternal and infant mortality disparities in the Black community.

“This is an issue she’s been a leader on. It’s an issue I’ve been a leader on,” El-Sayed said.

Harris has long been seen as a leading contender in the shadow 2028 Democratic presidential primary.

But she has largely been mum on her plans. In a recent podcast episode with former pro soccer player Megan Rapinoe on Vox Media, she said, “from my perspective ’28 doesn’t matter if we don’t win ’26.”

“It is critical we flip the Senate so we can bring down prices and stand up to Donald Trump’s corruption,” Eduardo Negrón, a spokesperson for Harris, said in a statement.

Still, some Democrats are steering clear of Harris in the midterms, particularly in redder territory.

Reid Hoffman, a prominent Democratic donor and co-founder of LinkedIn, said on Wednesday at POLITICO’s Decoded Summit that “I think [2028] would be a very challenging path for her and it’s going to be a very noisy field.”
