The quake destroyed a shopping mall in the city of Kumamoto, trapping shoppers under rubble

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake has struck Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan’s southern Kyushu region, causing extensive damage and killing “a considerable number of people,” according to local media.

The quake struck just before 4:30 PM local time on Tuesday, with its epicenter around 20 km south of Kumamoto, a city of 700,000 people. Video footage showed roads cracking, bridges collapsing, and buildings swaying as the tremor hit.

Police responded to reports of an explosion at Aeon Mall in Kumamoto, and found that the building’s second floor had collapsed. Japan’s TBS broadcaster said that a “considerable number” of people were killed in the collapse, while emergency services said that “many people” were trapped under the rubble.

“We are still assessing the extent of injuries and property damage, but I have been informed that there have already been several injuries,” Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in a statement. Takaichi said that 3,600 soldiers would be deployed to clear rubble and search for survivors.

Reports from multiple Japanese news outlets suggest that at least 100 people have been hospitalized with injuries.

Fires and power outages have been reported across Kumamoto Prefecture, and rail service has been suspended in the region. Around 300,000 people have been instructed to go to evacuation centers, as the quake’s shallow 10 km depth means that hundreds of aftershocks are expected in the coming hours and days.

There have already been at least 60 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 1 to 4, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The earthquake caused “no damage or safety issues at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant,” which is located around 100 km from the epicenter, the International Atomic Energy Agency wrote on social media.

Multiple fires have broken out since the quake struck. Firefighters in Uki City, Hikawa Town, and Hitoyoshi City have reportedly been sent to battle building fires connected to the earthquake.

Two devastating earthquakes hit Kumamoto in 2016. A magnitude 6.5 quake was followed by one of magnitude 7.3 two days later, killing 273 people and injuring more than 2,800. Sitting on top of the confluence of four major tectonic plates, Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. In 2011, the world’s fourth-most powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s northeastern Tohoku region, triggering a tsunami that killed almost 20,000 people and caused a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, ultimately rendering much of the surrounding area effectively uninhabitable.

Last week, US and Japanese forces conducted training exercises simulating a magnitude 8 to 9 earthquake along the Nankai Trough off Japan’s Pacific coast. Japan’s Earthquake Research Committee estimates a 70% to 80% chance of such a quake occurring in the next 30 years.
