US and Russia negotiations ‘on the double’.
It’s been a hectic couple of days in NYC with the General Assembly of the United Nations, where, besides the usual parade of nonentities, geopolitical movers and shakers came out and said their piece to the world.
The highlight of the day is certainly the Donald J. Trump and Xi Jinping mini-summit, a key meeting for both leaders.
But a secondary, but very consequential bilateral meeting also took place today, in which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on the sidelines of the UN.

The top diplomats met during the 81st UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week to discuss the Ukraine conflict and ways to improve diplomatic and commercial ties between the two nuclear superpowers.
Reuters reported:
“Ukraine and Russia have both voiced an interest in a limited ceasefire involving grain and energy-related targets, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in New York.
[…] ‘I think both sides have expressed an interest in some limited ceasefire that involve grain and energy. Obviously, you know, that won’t be easy either’, Rubio told reporters.”
Rubio also had news for the upcoming G20 summit, to be held in December, in Miami.

TASS reported:
“Discussing the Ukrainian conflict, Lavrov ‘drew attention to the close coordination between the Kiev regime and its European sponsors’. The ministry said that during the meeting, the sides ‘examined in detail Kiev’s destructive actions, including deliberate strikes against civilians and cross-border infrastructure, which destabilize global energy markets’.
‘The Russian side reaffirmed its unconditional commitment to achieving the goals of the special military operation, including through a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict that addresses its root causes’.”
If that was not enough, we learn that Vladimir Putin’s peace envoy Kirill Dmitriev is headed for the US to meet with Trump’s top envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

“Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev is heading to the US on Wednesday, where he will meet with Trump administration representatives Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and others, two sources familiar with preparations for the talks told Reuters.
The sources said Dmitriev’s visit to the US, which was agreed upon with Russian President Vladimir Putin, will take place in New York during the UN General Assembly and will follow up on a meeting between Putin and US representatives at the Kremlin earlier this month.
One source said that the aim of the visit is to keep the Russia-US dialogue and the peacemaking effort going.
The source added that economic cooperation between Russia and the US, as well as energy issues, and a peaceful settlement in Ukraine will be on the agenda of Dmitriev’s talks in New York.”
