Crowley waits on hometown absentees — from when he wasn't a candidate

Normally, waiting on an absentee vote drop from your home county would be reassuring in a close race. But as David Crowley’s team waits for Milwaukee County results, they have a major concern: He wasn’t even in the race for 10 days of early voting.

The incredible tightness of the results combined with the wild Democratic governor primary, which saw three major candidates drop out — including Crowley, who then got back in — has created an unpredictable finish to a bizarre race.

One Crowley ally said they believed there were enough votes left in Milwaukee for the county executive to seal up the nomination, as he currently leads democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong in the race, but they were “not 100% confident from the days he was dropped out.”

There are roughly 38,000 votes left in the county, with officials expecting 10,000 to be absentee ballots from the past two weeks that should help Crowley. There are also unreported precincts in Milwaukee’s heavily Black North Side, where Crowley has done incredibly well so far.

Crowley dropped from the Democratic primary for 10 days in July, a decision he said was hard but which he believed to be for the good of the party with another more moderate-leaning candidate ahead.

He only got back in after that campaign from Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez imploded over a campaign finance scandal and Gov. Tony Evers endorsed him. The two men have been barnstorming the state in recent days in an effort to head off Hong.
