Democrat Manny Rutinel, running for Congress in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, which accounts for 26% of the state’s beef and cattle output, and with 75% of its 2.5 million acres devoted to farming and raising livestock, is under fire for a resurfaced paper that attacks his constituents’ livelihoods.
The paper, Reducing Animal Agriculture Emissions: The Viability of a Farm Transition Carbon Offset Protocol by Rutinel and Sebastian Quaade, was published in 2022 and suggests that the Paris Agreement’s goals on fossil fuels are not enough and that there should be “ambitious policies that reform our food system.”
“Despite the growing awareness of animal agriculture’s climate impact, climate policy and action have historically focused on electricity and fuel use.”
A description of the paper reads, “Animal agriculture is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon offset markets allow entities to reduce their overall climate impact by financing projects that decrease emissions elsewhere.”
“This Article analyzes the viability of an offset protocol that credits farms for transitioning from raising livestock to growing crops, based on the difference in emissions between these operations.”
“It finds that a livestock-to-plants farm transition project can satisfy all of the criteria for offset protocols, and provides a preliminary methodology to calculate the emission reductions associated with a farm transition.”
“Carbon offset registries, legislative bodies, and administrative agencies may implement these findings to help address the environmental and social harms associated with our current food system.”
In recent months, Rutinel has twisted himself into a pretzel to distance himself from his anti-farming rhetoric to appeal to voters.
Fox News reports:
“Like all industry, there are bad apples, and I’ve spoken out against those bad apples that cause extreme and unnecessary animal cruelty in parts of the food industry and against the environmental cost of unsustainable food practices,” he said.
“They’re good stewards of the land, they care for their animals, and they are the backbone of our economy and our communities. Colorado ranchers are my friends and neighbors, and I’ve gotten to know them,” he added.
But through advocacy in college, testimony made before local government and a climate group he started, Rutinel has pressed the case that many climate advocates have articulated in the past: that livestock contribute to global emissions as a byproduct through their digestive systems.
The Colorado Sun State further reported that in since-deleted posts from almost a decade ago on Reddit, Rutinel voiced support for a movement that aims to put animals on the same legal footing as humans and, in turn, prohibit their slaughter for food and other uses.
The Reddit posts analyzed by The Colorado Sun are the latest evidence of Rutinel’s yearslong animal rights activism, which continued up until he was appointed to a seat in the state legislature in 2023. The posts also show just how ardent Rutinel was in his beliefs.
But Rutinel, a former vegan, says he no longer holds his most impassioned animal rights beliefs, which were inspired by a documentary he watched when he was 14.
“The views that I put in those posts when I was 22 are not my views today,” said Rutinel, now 31. “Those are the views of a 22-year-old kid. I’ve grown a lot, and I’m glad that I have.
