China’s New Space Weapon System Threatens US National Security

China’s expanding planetary defense program, which includes plans for an asteroid early-warning network and a 2027 kinetic-impact deflection mission, serves a dual purpose as both a diplomatic tool and a military asset.

Framed by Xi Jinping as a benevolent effort to protect humanity, aligning with his vision of a “community of shared future for mankind.”

The initiative allows Beijing to project prestige as a major space power. However, under China’s Military-Civil Fusion doctrine and the oversight of the People’s Liberation Army’s Aerospace Force, these advanced space technologies are designed to serve national defense objectives alongside civilian research.

The primary strategic concern lies in the dual-use technology required for asteroid deflection, which directly mirrors counter-space offensive capabilities.

A kinetic-impactor spacecraft designed to alter an asteroid’s course uses the same targeting mechanisms as a kinetic anti-satellite weapon intended to destroy or disable orbital assets.

Furthermore, the close-range monitoring spacecraft paired with the mission uses rendezvous and proximity tracking techniques identical to those required to shadow U.S. military and intelligence satellites.

As a result, China’s planetary defense tests effectively double as operational demonstrations of advanced anti-satellite warfare.

The space-ground monitoring network China describes as its early-warning system further expands this military utility. A sensor constellation built to detect, track, and calculate the orbit of small, faint, fast-moving asteroids is functionally identical to the architecture needed to locate and target adversary satellites.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s 2026 Annual Threat Assessment states China has eclipsed Russia as the primary U.S. competitor in space, building counterspace capabilities specifically to contest U.S. space dominance and target the satellites the U.S. military depends on for GPS, missile warning, communications, and precision strike.

The entities positioned to build this capability are explicitly tracked by U.S. defense officials. The Department of Defense’s June 2026 update to its Section 1260H list designates companies determined to be directly or indirectly owned, controlled by, or acting on behalf of China’s military, or that contribute to Beijing’s military-civil fusion strategy.

Three defense-linked firms named on this list intersect directly with the space and sensor technology underpinning China’s asteroid program.

China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation is described by the Joint Air Power Competence Centre as China’s domestic leader in missile systems, space launch vehicles, and space systems, explicitly including anti-satellite capabilities such as high-power lasers.

China SpaceSat Co., Ltd. serves as the satellite-manufacturing arm of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the state agency whose chief Long March rocket designer, Long Lehao, publicly presented details of the kinetic-impact mission, according to SpaceNews.

Meanwhile, China Electronics Technology Group Corporation is identified by JAPCC as China’s primary military electronics manufacturer, responsible for command-and-control systems and the foundational development behind China’s BeiDou satellite-navigation system.

Under China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law, all Chinese organizations and citizens are legally mandated to support, assist, and cooperate with national intelligence efforts.

Article 7 requires entities to assist state intelligence work and maintain secrecy, a requirement that applies extraterritorially to Chinese firms operating abroad, with the complete legal framework accessible via China Law Translate.

Consequently, Chinese commercial enterprises do not operate as independent entities in the Western sense. Any technical advances made in kinetic-impact engineering, orbital rendezvous, or deep-space tracking, regardless of whether they are publicly framed as scientific or humanitarian, are legally accessible to the Chinese government on demand.

Once acquired, the state can route these capabilities directly to military-affiliated enterprises developing missile defense, space-based weapons, and satellite tracking architectures.
