Chicago’s Archbishop Joins Two Orders of Catholic Nuns in a Lawsuit Against the State of Illinois for Trying to Force Them To Help Patients Commit Assisted Suicide

This is a hill where we will fight until the end.

Here on TGP, we have been consistently on the front lines in the war against the culture of death that is infiltrating the US and so many other Western societies.

We have been following the efforts by the newest US Dem-controlled state to adopt a policy of Euthanasia or ‘Assisted Suicide’.

We are also tracking the pushback from Catholic nuns and other Christian healthcare providers who refuse to be forced to participate in these Satanic state practices.

And now, they have been joined by quite the reinforcement.

Daily Caller reported:

“Chicago’s archbishop, Cardinal Blase Cupich, joined two orders of Catholic nuns and an Illinois pharmacist in a lawsuit filed Thursday in an effort to block the End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act (EOLOA), the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty stated in a press release.

The law, which they say would force the Church to help terminally ill patients kill themselves in violation of its teachings on the dignity of life, was signed by Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker in December 2025 and is scheduled to go into effect Sept. 12.”

The lawsuit names the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation as defendants.

“’The state should stop trying to make Catholic nuns help patients kill themselves’,” [lead attorney Mark] Rienzi states in the press release. ‘It is awful for Illinois to be forcing every sick and dying person within its borders to hear its message of suicide at their lowest moment — regardless of whether they want it or not. Patients deserve the freedom to seek healing, hope, and accompaniment without the government forcing suicide into the conversation. The Constitution protects that freedom’.

[…] The lawsuit alleges that the EOLOA threatens the religious freedom of Catholics within the Illinois healthcare system by imposing fines on those who refuse to dispense lethal drugs.”

Cardinal Cupich vocally opposed the law when approved last year, accusing Gov. JB Pritzker of ‘legitimizing suicide as a valid solution for life’s challenges’.

Chicago Sun-Times reported:

“Cupich’s suit is one of at least three filed ahead of the law’s effective date: Sept. 12. A federal judge is expected to rule Friday on a request for a preliminary injunction on one of the suits. Cupich joined two orders of nuns and an Illinois pharmacist Thursday in seeking to block the law via a permanent injunction.

Illinois joined 11 other states that have passed so-called “right-to-die” legislation, which is opposed by many religious leaders and disability rights activists.

“Where the current Pope, along with Cardinal Cupich, has commanded that Illinois Catholics must ‘respect the sacredness of life from the very beginning to the very end’ by not participating in assisted suicide, the state has no business forcing them to do just that,” states the suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

[…] The plaintiffs state they want a federal judge to stop the state from providing counsel and information about assisted suicide — and from helping a patient qualify or fill a prescription for ‘suicide drugs’, among other requests.”
