The US Attorney from the Eastern District of Virginia, who is under fire for not charging Letitia James, is resigning.
Earlier Friday it was reported that President Trump was gearing up to fire the US Attorney refusing to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James for mortgage fraud.
Erik Siebert, the interim US Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, was reportedly unwilling to charge Letitia James amid reports that the DOJ hasn’t gathered enough evidence to bring an indictment.
Per CNN: “President Donald Trump intends to fire US Attorney Erik Siebert, who has been under pressure to charge New York Attorney General Letitia James with mortgage fraud, two sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN.”
Later Friday, CNN and AP reported that Siebert is resigning.
“US Attorney Erik Siebert told his staff Friday he will be stepping down, according to a person familiar with the matter, after facing intense pressure from President Donald Trump to charge New York Attorney General Letitia James with mortgage fraud,” CNN reported.
“It’s not clear when his resignation will take effect. Trump said earlier Friday that Siebert, the US attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, should lose his job,” CNN reported.
President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he wants Siebert OUT.
“I want him out. When I learned that he was blue slipped through by two Democrat senators in Virginia — people that haven’t voted for us for probably years — in my opinion two bad guys,” Trump said.
