The Brutalist — the Best Picture Oscar-nominated historical epic starring Adrien Brody — is coming soon streaming video on demand on Max.

Rated R, The Brutalist opened in theaters for an awards qualifying run on Dec. 20, 2024, and expanded in theaters on Jan. 17 before debuting on digital streaming on Feb. 18.

The summary for The Brutalist reads, “Escaping post-war Europe, visionary architect László Toth (Brody) arrives in America to rebuild his life, his work, and his marriage to his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) after being forced apart during wartime by shifting borders and regimes.

“On his own in a strange new country, László settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce) recognizes his talent for building. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost …”

Directed by Brady Corbet, The Brutalist also stars Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach de Bankolé and Alessandro Nivola.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced in a press release on Monday that The Brutalist will premiere on streaming video on demand on Max on Friday, May 16, and will begin airing on HBO on Saturday, May 17 at 8 p.m. ET.

Max offers a basic package with ads for $9.99 per month, as well as a standard package without ads for $16.99 per month. In addition, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service has an ad-free package for $20.99 per month that includes 4K Ultra HD programming.

‘The Brutalist’ Won Three Oscars In March

In addition to its Best Picture Oscar nomination, The Brutalist received nine other nominations including Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Original Screenplay for Corbet and Mona Fastvold, Best Supporting Actress for Felicity Jones and Best Supporting Actor for Guy Pearce.

The Brutalist won three statuettes at the 2025 Oscars, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography for Lol Crawley and Best Original Score for Daniel Blumberg.

The film earned a 93% “fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 319 reviews and an 80% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings.

The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Structurally beautiful and suffused with Adrien Brody’s soulful performance, writer-director Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist is a towering tribute to the immigrant experience.”

At the box office, The Brutalist earned $16.2 million domestically and $33 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $49.3 million. The film had a $10 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to Slate.

The Brutalist premieres on Max on May 16 and will begin airing on HBO on May 17 at 8 p.m. ET.
