Speaker Mike Johnson said he plans to discuss a developing House framework for a bipartisan bill regulating artificial intelligence companies when he meets with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Wednesday. Johnson is among a number of Washington dignitaries Altman is meeting with as he makes the rounds on Capitol Hill and at the White House. “He comes in on occasion to provide updates, and we’re going to talk about AI and the regulatory framework,” the speaker said in a Wednesday morning interview. Johnson said he was referencing a discussion draft that Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) is working with Rep. Lori…
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum lashed out against U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson, telling him to butt out of her country’s domestic issues. The comment came in response to Johnson’s earlier statement that the fight against cartels was not political. The scuffle comes at a time of great tension between both countries, as Sheinbaum has been fiercely In her most recent morning news conference, Sheinbaum criticized Johnson, claiming that he needed to stay in his lane and that Mexico’s issues were for Mexicans to handle. Sheinbaum’s rebuke came after Johnson posted on social media a message claiming that the fight…
Businesses in the U.S. added more jobs than expected in May, a signal that the economy’s demand for labor is accelerating. Private-sector payrolls rose by 122,00, ADP Research said Wednesday, the biggest increase since January of 2025. The prior month’s estimate was revised down by 4,000 to 105,000. The median estimate in an Econoday survey of economists called for a 120,000 increase. The data on the growth of private payrolls follows Tuesday’s JOLTS report showing far more job vacancies than expected and a low level of layoffs. Both point to a growing appetite for workers even as the Iran war…
Phoenix Pride, a prominent organization behind Arizona’s largest LGBTQ+ gathering, announced on the eve of “Pride Month” that it has filed for bankruptcy. “The filing, submitted Thursday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona, showed that Phoenix Pride was seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, allowing time to continue operations while restructuring its debts under court supervision,” the Tucson Sentinel reported. The organization’s board of directors said in a press release that the decision “was not made lightly.” “Rising operational costs, economic uncertainty, shifts in sponsorship and fundraising partly due to the current political climate and administration, and…
President Donald Trump’s pick of a political ally as acting director of national intelligence could jeopardize the passage of a key government spy powers renewal just as lawmakers were closing in on a deal. Trump’s choice of Bill Pulte on Tuesday evoked the outrage of Democrats and skepticism of some Republicans on Capitol Hill. Pulte has no intelligence background and has used his current perch as a housing finance regulator to push for investigations into Trump’s perceived political enemies. “His supposed elevation as the acting director of National Intelligence will jeopardize the effort to pass surveillance legislation that was already…
As Israel expands the war in Lebanon, Washington’s influence over its closest ally looks increasingly limited In recent days, Israel has intensified its military campaign in Lebanon, taking the operation to a whole new level. This isn’t just another exchange of strikes in the south of the country, but a demonstrative expansion of Israel’s ground presence beyond the previous boundaries of the conflict. Israeli forces crossed the Litani River and captured Beaufort Castle, a symbolically and strategically significant fortress perched on a high cliff in southern Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the operation was carried out at…
The U.S. Department of State is preparing to drastically reduce the number of African embassies that will be able to process visas for migrants looking to enter the U.S.A., according to reports. Currently there are 50 U.S. embassies and consulates across Africa that have the capability to process visa applications and vet applicants, but the Associated Press reports that the Trump administration intends to slash that down to only 20 that will be permitted to process applications from Africans who wish to migrate to or visit the U.S. The move would be part of the administration’s efforts to tighten visas…
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) says scandal-ridden Graham Platner has the “guts” to fight billionaires — despite headline after headline proving a nightmare for the Maine Democrat Senate candidate’s campaign. “What we’re looking at right now is a situation where billionaires have already pledged to spend $90 million in a tiny state like Maine,” Sanders said, according to a report by Fox News. “Trust me, that is a lot of money. They don’t want him in,” the Vermont senator added of Platner, who, during his campaign, faced scrutiny for sporting a Nazi-linked tattoo. Sanders, however, argues that the skeletons in Platner’s closet are only being…
We have never faced anything quite like this. Diesel fuel and fertilizer have become far more expensive as a result of the conflict in the Middle East, and extreme weather is playing havoc with crops all over the planet. Here in the United States, we just experienced the driest first three months of a year in recorded history. No, that isn’t an exaggeration. Now a “Super El Niño” is coming, and that means that drought conditions are going to get even worse in many areas of the world. The “Super El Niño” of 1877-1878 resulted in widespread droughts that killed more than 50…
Hundreds of protesters descended upon the Southampton Central police station on Tuesday evening as tensions ran high following the release of bodycam footage showing officers handcuffing 18-year-old Henry Nowak as he bled to death while begging for their help. Chanting Nowak’s final words, “I can’t breathe”, hundreds of Britons took to the streets of Southampton to demand justice for the slain student, who was murdered last year by 23-year-old Vikrum Digwa with a ceremonial Sikh knife. As police came onto the scene, they were falsely told by Digwa’s family that Nowak had been racially abusive. Despite Nowak being in clear…
