Rumors began circulating this week that Paul Biya, Cameroon’s authoritarian leader for more than four decades, has died. While Biya’s government denied them on Wednesday, claiming he is alive and well in Switzerland, Biya has not made a public appearance in over a month. U.S. inflation is running hotter than expected. The consumer price index rose in September 2.4 percent from a year earlier, the Department of Labor said Thursday. Economists had forecast a 2.3 percent increase in consumer prices after the August reading Compared with a month earlier, prices rose 0.2 percent. That’s an acceleration from the 0.1 percent recorded in August. Core CPI, a measure that excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.3 percent for the month. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is seeking $2.3 billion to spend on 14,000 hotel rooms to house migrants through 2025, according to reports. The Adams administration projects the spending will be needed for the 150 hotels that are currently under contract with the city to house illegals, according to the New York Post.
