Centre-right leader Friedrich Merz is the new Chancellor of Germany on the second time of trying, ten weeks after an inconclusive national election that left Merz negotiating for a coalition with the defeated left-wing. History was made on Tuesday in Berlin after it took two attempts to get through just the formality of electing the head of the incoming governing coalition as Chancellor — Germany’s Prime Minister analogue — the first having stumbled for the want of just six votes. Although the German constitution provides for such an outcome, this is the first time it has ever happened, and augers…
OpenAI’s decision to partly walk back its plan to restructure as a for-profit business “changes nothing,” according to Elon Musk’s attorney, indicating that the billionaire may continue his legal battle against the AI startup. Bloomberg reports that in a statement released late Monday, Marc Toberoff, Elon Musk’s lead counsel in pending litigation against OpenAI, criticized the company’s revised restructuring plan, calling it a “transparent dodge” that fails to address the fundamental issues at hand. Earlier that day, OpenAI announced that it would proceed with restructuring its for-profit division as a public benefit corporation while maintaining the overall business under the…

US Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Tuesday that federal authorities have seized roughly three million fentanyl pills, totaling 11.5 kilograms, in “the largest seizure in our nation’s history.” The deadly synthetic opioid, which is up to 50 times more potent than heroin, is mainly manufactured in China and smuggled into the US by drug cartels. It is often mixed into counterfeit pills, causing unsuspecting individuals to overdose. Under Biden, fentanyl became the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18-45. This comes after Bondi announced last week that over 22 million fentanyl-laced pills had been seized in Trump’s first 100…

China and Egypt on Sunday concluded their first joint aerial exercise – a troubling example of cooperation between America’s primary adversary and the recipient of $1.5 billion in annual American assistance. The China-Egypt “Eagles of Civilization 2025” air force exercise, which began on April 19, involved Chinese combat aircraft, early-warning radar planes, helicopter gunships, and airborne tankers. Egyptian officials were coy about whether the American F-16 fighters, AH-64 Apache helicopters, and Patriot missile systems in their inventory were involved in any of the training missions. “The Egyptian Air Force commander, the Chinese Air Force chief of staff, the Chinese ambassador…
The U.S. trade deficit surged to a record high in March as companies rushed to import pharmaceuticals, vehicles, and capital equipment ahead of expected new tariffs from the Trump administration. The goods and services trade gap widened 14 percent to $140.5 billion, according to Commerce Department data released Tuesday. That marked the largest monthly deficit on record, exceeding economists’ expectations for a $137.2 billion shortfall. The February deficit stood at $122.7 billion. Driving the March increase was a 4.4 percent jump in imports to a record $419.0 billion, led by a historic rise in pharmaceutical shipments. Imports of pharmaceutical preparations…
