Maybe, in the future, historians will mark today, September 4, 2026, as the start of the Second Falkland War.
Javier Milei gave a televised speech today in which he launched a renewed push for the control of the Falkland Islands – or, as they call it, the Malvinas.
Milei described Britain as a country in decline, and vowed that Argentina would ‘prevail’.
He also announced sanctions for companies drilling for oil in the seas around the islands.
It’s not a coincidence that this comes a day after U.S. President Donald J. Trump hinted that he won’t help defend Britain if Argentina moves on the Falklands.

“Milei also announced that Argentina would build a new military base in Tierra del Fuego as part of the country’s growing strategic alliance with Washington.
‘In the world, the winds are blowing favorably for our claim right now’, he said in a televised address to the nation on Thursday night. ‘Recently, President [Donald] Trump announced that the United States is re-evaluating its historic position regarding the Malvinas. Argentina is a country with natural resources, in a position of geographic strategic relevance that is not affected by uncontrolled immigration, the violence this brings, and the problems of national security that today stalk Europe.”

Milei noted that the UK experiences multiple crises: migratory, demographic and economic, and that these will be difficult to solve. ‘It is clear that they are in decline. However, Argentina is flourishing, and it will prevail’.

“Javier Milei, the president of the ruptures, last night stridently returned to the classic line of Argentine diplomacy regarding the conflict over the Malvinas Islands. He embraced the “national cause” that came out of its lethargy a month and a half ago as a result of a soccer match in the World Cup that ended with the last miracle of Lionel Messi. He drew on a series of pre-existing measures to show how serious he is with his proposal.
His speech brought him closer to the positions defended by Cristina Kirchner at the height of her power. But a card that she never had in the deck played in her favor: the possibility of U.S. support. Milei’s strategic commitment to the alliance with Donald Trump yields a very clear fruit. In the government’s view, Trump’s nods about a possible change in the US position on the Malvinas are the reflection of a greater change at the geopolitical level: a revaluation of the South Atlantic and Argentina’s role as a reliable ally in the face of a conflict on a global scale. At the same time, there is a crisis in the historical link between Washington and London. The question is whether today’s discord will not end in a sudden reconciliation, as often happens when Trump is involved.”

The British opposition took advantage of Milei’s statements to accuse the Labour government of the new prime minister, Andy Burnham, of having projected an image of weakness by agreeing to the cession of Chagos and, with it, having emboldened Buenos Aires in its claim for the Malvinas.”
