Democratic operatives say Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley is so far in a strong position to win the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor, outperforming expectations against democratic socialist Francesca Hong in early results across the state.
Crowley allies say he’s doing even better statewide than they thought he would, making the race closer than expected as votes are still being counted.
One key blow to Hong: Democrats in the state were waiting to see how much state Sen. Kelda Roys split the Dane County vote. And Roys is currently holding Hong down a fair amount in what’s supposed to be the latter’s stronghold.
Hong is performing well in some wealthier, white Milwaukee areas. But she’s underwater in a lot of other places.
Crowley, who went on a last-ditch barnstorming tour with Gov. Tony Evers to head off Hong as she consistently led in the polls, is also doing better than expected in key suburban counties outside Milwaukee.
Crowley also notched “Bashar al-Assad numbers across the northside” of Milwaukee, said one Democratic Party official granted anonymity to candidly discuss the returns.
