Francesca Hong’s team is making press credentials for reporters at her election night party using sharpies and masking tape after quickly running out of printed passes for media — an example of her insurgent campaign’s remarkable rise despite extremely limited resources.
Hong, who in campaign speeches this week has described herself as a “long shot” and “wild card” candidate, is polling far ahead of David Crowley, who had been endorsed by the sitting Democratic governor, Tony Evers. Hong sailed to the lead despite a massive fundraising disadvantage and a team that largely lacks experience working on a campaign this high profile.
The media line stretched down the block and it took about 45 minutes for me to get inside the Atwood Music Hall, a sign of the suddenly intense national interest in the democratic socialist’s insurgent campaign.
Inside, supporters are mingling while commercials for toothpaste and cell phones play on a large screen on the stage, and the Black Eyed Peas’ “Imma Be” blasts over speakers.
