Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, who dropped out of the Democratic Senate race a month before the primary, endorsed Abdul El-Sayed as he maintained a narrow advantage over Rep. Haley Stevens early Wednesday morning.
“I’m proud to give Abdul my full endorsement and support as we head to November together as a unified party,” she said in a statement.
El-Sayed led Stevens by roughly two points at the time of McMorrow’s endorsement. Both candidates said early Wednesday morning the race would likely be decided later in the day.
McMorrow urged Democrats to unite behind El-Sayed after a bruising primary that saw all three candidates trade personal attacks before she dropped out.
“Take it from me — this was a brutal primary. But whatever differences there were between the candidates in this race, those differences are nothing compared to the contrast in November,” she said.
McMorrow’s campaign ended after she failed to find a lane in between Stevens’ moderate campaign and El-Sayed’s progressive movement. But she garnered enough support in the state to earn tens of thousands of votes in Tuesday’s primary in a race that may likely be decided by a similar, if not smaller, margin.
In her endorsement, McMorrow referred to El-Sayed as “winning” the Democratic nomination after some media outlets called the race for El-Sayed. The Associated Press has not yet projected a winner in the race.
