95% of Hungarian Citizens in Referendum Reject Ukraine Entering the European Union, Emboldening Prime Minister Orbán To Keep Vetoing It

Orbán does not want Ukraine and its war in the European Union.

For the last three and a half years, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stood almost alone against the constant pro-Ukraine war mongering in Europe, only very recently joined by Slovak PM Robert Fico.

Orbán has consistently opposed Ukraine’s entrance on the EU, and has called a national referendum in Hungary about this, in which no less than 95% of those participating rejected ‘dragging’ the war-torn country into the troubled union.

‘They said NO to war, NO to economic ruin, and NO to Brussels’ delusions. With over 2 million votes cast, we’re taking our people’s mandate for peace and common sense to Brussels’, wrote Orbán on social media platform X.

The conservative champion argues that Ukraine’s EU membership would drag the entire Union into the war.

Now, backed by over two million Hungarian votes, he is sending a warning to Brussels to stop their ‘reckless plans’ once and for all.

Kyiv Independent reported:

“The poll, promoted by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government, has already drawn criticism over its credibility and turnout. [Hungarian news outlet] Telex reported that the system could be manipulated — testing showed that users were able to vote twice using different email addresses.

According to Telex, 2,278,000 people participated in the consultation — approximately 29% of the electorate that voted in the 2024 European Parliament elections. Of those, the government claimed 95% voted against Ukraine joining the EU, while only 5% supported the bid.”

Orbán is an unmovable obstacle for Kiev’s European ambitions.

The national vote on Ukraine’s EU accession was announced in March as part of Orbán’s effort to block the process.

Euractiv reported:

“According to the Hungarian government, the results published on Thursday show that 95% of surveyed citizens – approximately around 29% of the country’s eligible electorate – oppose Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

[…] Throughout the campaign, Orbán’s government made a concerted effort to sway public opinion, including widespread billboard, letter, and flyer messaging against Ukraine’s accession.

Orbán told reporters in Brussels at the EU summit that, based on these results, he plans to continue vetoing the opening of any further EU negotiation chapters with Ukraine.

‘The problem is the war, if we were to integrate Ukraine into the EU, we would integrate the war, we wouldn’t want to be in the same community as a country at war’, Orbán said.”

Ukraine’s EU membership would drag the entire Union into war. Backed by over two million Hungarian votes, we brought that warning to Brussels and stopped their reckless plans in their tracks. Our people have spoken, and their message couldn’t be clearer: NO means NO! pic.twitter.com/wOKhtuG6ra
