On Sunday, May 4, hundreds of visitors gathered at George Washington’s historic estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia, to view a “once in a lifetime” reenactment on the 250th anniversary of George Washington’s decampment to the Second Continental Congress, to be named commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.
In addition to viewing the reenactment, ticket holders gained access to astonishing Revolutionary War battle demonstrations, dozens of war tents, 18th Century marketplaces, and tours of George Washington’s Mount Vernon residence.
As Mount Vernon’s official website promoted the event:
“Become part of the action by viewing a once-in-a-lifetime recognition and reenactment of George Washington’s historic departure on May 4, 1775, from his beloved Mount Vernon to attend the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. There, Washington was appointed commander in chief of the newly created Continental Army.
During the reenactment, George Washington will march down the Patriots Path and out Mount Vernon’s front gates accompanied by 18th-century musicians and a cadre of historic reenactors dressed in period costumes.”
On Sunday, the actor playing George Washington delivered an inspirational speech, before leading his men through the front gate of the estate, bound for Philadelphia.

“I will go to Philadelphia – for you, for myself, and for our country. And I shall make to you the same promise that I made to Mrs. Washington, when we parted, not half an hour ago. I should be home for Christmas – but madam, please forgive me, if I cannot tell you which Christmas.”
“Now, friends, I would ask that you would take these first steps with me along this Patriots Path,” George Washington said.
After marching down the Patriots Path with George Washington, guests at Mount Vernon returned to the 12 acre field outside of George Washington’s residence, to view a tactical battle demonstration between the British Army and the Continental Army.
The British Army significantly outnumbered the Continental Army during the battle demonstration.
The British forces boasted much finer uniforms and artillery. Yet, the Continental Army hung tough, amid gunfire and cannon fire.
Hundreds of precious uniforms and expensive 18th century weaponry were put on display during this battle demonstration, narrated by a knowledgable historian.
