Loveland police say a student brought an unloaded firearm to High Plains School in Loveland in early April.

That student and another were issued summons following an investigation, police said in an April 11 news release. The students are both juveniles and were not identified by police, the school or Thompson School District.

Loveland police received a report of a student bringing a weapon to the school on April 3 and immediately launched an investigation, the news release said. The preliminary investigation determined a student had brought an unloaded firearm to High Plains School on April 1, according to police. Police say the other student was involved but did not provide any additional details of that student’s involvement.

Both students were issued summons for unlawfully carrying a weapon on school grounds, a misdemeanor, and have court appearances set, Loveland police said in a statement shared by spokesperson Chris Padgett.

High Plains is a public school serving students from preschool through eighth grade. It is located at 4255 Buffalo Mountain Drive, near Boyd Lake.

Police referred questions to Thompson School District. District spokesperson Michael Hausmann said the district could not provide any information beyond what was shared by police and by Principal Danielle Feeney in two messages to the school community.

Hausmann shared both messages with the Coloradoan on request April 11 after Loveland police issued their news release.

The report investigated by police was the second “safety concern” reported to the school that day for what Feeney and Hausmann both said were separate, unrelated incidents.

An investigation into the first incident, Feeney wrote in an April 3 message, was completed by the school district’s security team, while the second involved law enforcement.

“Law enforcement team members have taken specific steps on their end, and I want to assure you that our community is safe,” Feeney wrote in the April 3 message. “Due to legal restrictions and district procedures, I am not able to share the full details of the incident. However, I want to stress again that our campus is safe and that there is no elevated risk to our school.”

Loveland police asked anyone who might have additional information regarding the incident they are investigating to call the department’s tip line at 970-962-2032 or Larimer County Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Arrests and charges are merely accusations by law enforcement until, and unless, a suspect is convicted of a crime.
