Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived on Thursday at a meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels focused on increasing aid for Ukraine and European defence capacities.

“During all this period and last week, you stayed with us,” said Zelensky.

“We are very thankful that we are not alone. These are not just words. We feel it,” he added.

Zelensky addressed journalists together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, who will chair the meeting.

“This is a watershed moment for Europe,” said von der Leyen.

“Europe faces a clear and present danger, and therefore Europe has to be able to protect itself, to defend itself, as we have to put Ukraine in a position to protect itself and to push for a lasting and just peace,” she added.
