WINCHESTER, Ind. — An 19-year-old Ohio man was killed Thursday evening in a one-vehicle crash on Ind. 227 in southeastern Randolph County.

Devon Lumpkin, 19, of Union City, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, north of the state highway’s intersection with U.S. 36.

According to Major Josh Geesy of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, Lumpkin was a passenger in a Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Shawn Lane Jr., 18, of New Castle, that was northbound on Ind. 227 when it ran a stop sign at U.S. 36.

Lane then lost control of the truck, which left the west side of the highway, rolled several times and struck a utility pole.

Lumpkin was ejected from the vehicle. Lane was seriously injured, and was flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

The crash, about 12 miles southeast of Winchester, was reported about 6:15 p.m.

Responding to the scene along with sheriff’s deputies were Lynn, Winchester and Union City firefighters, Randolph County EMS and a representative of the Randolph County coroner’s office.

The crash remains under investigation.
