Will There Be ‘The Last Of Us’ Season 3? Here’s The Really Good News

The moment is finally here. HBO’s Emmy-winning series The Last of Us is airing its Season 2 finale on Sunday, May 25. As you watch the last episode of the emotional season, you might be wondering about the future of the series, including whether HBO has greenlit a third season.

Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, Season 2 of the hit HBO sci-fi drama premiered in April 2025. The first season was based on the popular 2013 video game franchise of the same name, while Season 2 takes inspiration from the game’s sequel, 2020’s The Last of Us Part II.

The second installment picks up five years after the events of Season 1. So far in Season 2, viewers have witnessed the devastating death of Joel, the war between the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and Seraphites and the beginning of Ellie’s journey to hunt down Abby for killing the person she loved most. The Cordyceps are getting eerily smarter, and the zombie virus can now spread through airborne spores, making infection even easier.

Season 2, Episode 7, “Convergence,” marks the final episode of the seven-episode second season. When asked by W Magazine how fans will feel about the finale, Ramsey said the question of “who’s the hero and who’s the villain” is amplified.

“And whether it’s even as clear-cut as that, what lengths grief and revenge can take you to, and the morality of who is right and justified in their actions. It’s complicated. The finale leans into that moral conflict,” they continued.

Here’s everything to know about the renewal status of The Last of Us Season 3 below.

Yes, HBO renewed The Last of Us for Season 3 on April 9, 2025, just a few days before the premiere of Season 2.

Some fans may have been disappointed to learn that Season 2 of The Last of Us is only seven episodes long – two fewer than Season 1. However, according to showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, this was intentional and will pay off in future seasons.

Because Part II of the video game covers so much ground, they teased that Season 3 will be significantly bigger. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that – as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television – Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4,” Mazin told Deadline in June 2024.

“It can’t be overemphasized how proud HBO is for the outstanding achievement we believe the second season of The Last of Us is,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement when the renewal was announced.

“Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the entire executive producer team, cast and crew have delivered a masterful follow-up and we’re thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil’s storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season,” Orsi added.

Mazin, who also serves as the show’s creator, executive producer, writer and director, said, “We look forward to continuing the story of THE LAST OF US with season three!”

HBO has not yet announced a release date for The Last of Us Season 3. There were more than two years between Seasons 1 and 2. The second season began filming in February 2024 and concluded in August 2024. If Season 3 follows a similar timeline, the next installment could start filming in 2026 and premiere sometime in early 2027.

Stay tuned for more details on the release of The Last of Us Season 3.

The Last of Us Season 2 finale is airing on HBO and Max at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, May 25.
