A Complete Unknown director James Mangold and The Brutalist director Brady Corbet are among the five filmmakers nominated for the 2025 Directors Guild of America Awards.

The DGA announced the nominations for its 77th annual ceremony on Wednesday. Joining Corbet and Mangold in this year’s race for the DGA Award are Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, Sean Baker for Anora and Edward Berger for Conclave.

“2024 has been a truly extraordinary year for storytelling – and today’s nominees have created audacious and unique films that expand the possibilities of cinematic excellence,” DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter said in a statement.

“I am thrilled to congratulate all our nominated directors for their brilliant work, which is visionary, inspirational and speaks to the depth of the human experience,” Glatter added. “To be chosen by one’s peers is the true marker of outstanding directorial achievement and what makes these nominations so very special.”

Per the guild, all but eight directors who won the DGA Award in the past 76 years have gone on to win the Best Director Oscar at the Academy Awards.

The nominations for the 2025 DGA Awards come the same day that the Screen Actors Guild announced its 2025 nominations for film and television.

Wicked leads the SAG Awards nominations with five nominations, while A Complete Unknown, Anora and Emilia Pérez are next with three nods each.

The 2025 SAG nominees for Outstanding Acting Ensemble in a Motion Picture—which is the equivalent of a Best Picture honor—are A Complete Unknown, Anora, Conclave, Emilia Pérez and Wicked.

Earlier this week, Corbet was named Best Director for The Brutalist at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes.

What Directors Were Snubbed In The DGA Nominations?

Among the high-profile filmmakers who missed out on a DGA nomination are Jon M. Chu for Wicked, Coralie Fergaut for The Substance and Denis Villeneuve for Dune: Part Two.

Like the Oscars, the DGA only nominates five filmmakers for its annual awards.

By contrast, the Golden Globes nominated six directors this year. In addition to Brady Corbet and Fergaut, the other directors nominated at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes included Edward Berger (Conclave), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Payal Kapadia (All We See is Light) and Sean Baker (Anora).

The DGA also announced Wednesday the nominees for the Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film.

Among the directors in the running for the award are Payal Kapadia for All We Imagine as Light, Megan Park for My Old Ass, Ramell Ross for Nickel Boys, Halfdan Ullmann Tondell for Armand and Sean Wang for Didi.

The 2025 DGA Awards will be handed out in Los Angeles on Feb. 8.
