Rated R, Death of a Unicorn is written and directed by Alex Scharfman. The logline for the movie reads, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard E. Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
Death of a Unicorn also stars Téa Leoni, Will Poulter, Sunita Mani, Jessica Hynes, Steve Park and Anthony Carrigan.
Currently, the only way you can see Death of a Unicorn is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes.
When Death of a Unicorn comes to the home entertainment market, its first stop will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand.
Death of a Unicorn’s studio, A24, seems to follow a regular pattern when making its films available on PVOD. While there are exceptions, there’s generally a month window between the opening of the studio’s films in theaters and the day they arrive on PVOD.
For example, A24 opened the Adrien Brody historical epic The Brutalist in wide release on Jan. 24 and it arrived on PVOD on Feb. 20.
In addition, the studio released the Nicole Kidman erotic thriller Babygirl on Dec. 25, 2024, and it made its debut on PVOD on Jan. 28. Before that, the Hugh Grant horror thriller Heretic opened in theaters on Nov. 8 before making it available for purchase or rental on PVOD on Dec. 10.
If Death of a Unicorn follows the same release pattern as The Brutalist, Babygirl and Heretic, viewers can expect the film to arrive on PVOD sometime between April 29 to May 5, since new movies on PVOD generally are released on Tuesdays.
PVOD releases generally run anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99 to purchase and $14.99 to $24.99 for a 48-hour rental period on such digital platforms as AppleTV, Fandango at Home and Prime Video.
What Streaming Service Will Get Jenna Ortega’s ‘Death Of A Unicorn’ First?
Since A24 has a deal with Max to stream its movies first, Death of a Unicorn will make its streaming video on demand debut on the Warner Bros. Discovery platform.
Viewers can opt to subscribe to Max for $9.99 per month with ads or $16.99 per month without ads. Also, Max has an ad-free package for $20.99 per month with its programming in 4K Ultra HD.
The last few A24 films have taken about four months to arrive on Max. Heretic arrived on SVOD on Max on March 7, roughly four months after its theatrical debut on Nov. 8, 2024.
Also, Babygirl is set to arrive on Max on April 25, exactly four months after it opened in theaters on Dec. 25, 2024.
If Death of a Unicorn follows the same release pattern, viewers can expect the film to arrive on Max sometime between June 27 and July 4, since the streamer tends to debut its new SVOD releases on Fridays.
