It’s shaping up to be a busy New Year’s Eve across the Valley.

Bougie bashes are planned in Scottsdale. A block party — and lots of bar celebrations — are booked in downtown Phoenix.

Meanwhile, Glendale will host the Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium, with the Penn State Nittany Lions and Boise State Broncos facing off at 5:30 p.m. The city will also see parties in the Westgate Entertainment District.

But before the fun can begin, revelers must first make it to their planned celebrations — and later, make it home safely. Here’s what to know if you’re planning to travel to the party tonight.

Roads: No highway closures, expect West Valley traffic

No major freeway or highway closures are scheduled through Jan. 6, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be traffic. State officials said drivers should plan ahead, allow extra travel time and be alert for unexpected closures because of crashes or other incidents on the roads.

Glendale traffic engineer Tony Abbo said in a video posted to the city’s social media accounts that he expects the Fiesta Bowl and other festivities to clog up West Valley roadways. He encouraged game goers to arrive early and purchase parking tickets online in advance.

Abbo recommended that those attending the game or other celebrations consider using rideshare services.

“We encourage people to use rideshare or shuttles,” he said. “It’ll make the experience a lot better and more enjoyable for everybody.”

Transit: Free rides with Valley Metro

Valley Metro will offer free rides on all transit services on New Year’s Eve starting at 7 p.m.

“Just get on board — no need to pay, scan or tap,” Valley Metro said in a news release.

On New Year’s Eve, the light rail and Tempe streetcar will operate on a weekday schedule with extended service hours until 2 a.m. Buses will operate on a normal weekday schedule.

On New Year’s Day, the light rail and Tempe streetcar will operate on a Sunday schedule. Buses will run on a Sunday schedule as well, without Express/RAPID service. Valley Metro customer service will be closed.

Safety: Plan ahead, stay alert while driving

State and local officials are encouraging drivers to take to the roads cautiously on New Year’s Eve.

Officials said partiers should plan ahead and designate a driver before going out to celebrate. Drivers should stay alert, keep speeds in check and avoid driving while impaired or tired.

Travelers should also be sure to buckle up while in their vehicles. Officials said seatbelts can save lives in the event of a crash.

Abbo urged special caution in the West Valley, where traffic is likely to be especially heavy.

“Safety is a very important aspect for us,” Abbo said. “Please be sure to drive slow in the area. Take your time and make sure you get there early. We want to make this a memorable experience for everybody.”

Road trips: Pack an emergency kit, check weather conditions

Those traveling long distances to see family should store an emergency kit in the event of car troubles, inclement weather or major traffic jams.

Officials recommend packing extra bottled water, snacks, a flashlight with extra batteries, blankets, warm clothing and a first aid kit. Travelers should also pack cellphone chargers and prescription medications.

Before traveling, officials encourage drivers to check their vehicles, including tire pressure, engine belts and hoses, fluid levels and windshield wipers. Travelers should always check weather conditions before heading out for a trip.
