Alex Jeffrey Pretti was killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis on Saturday

The man fatally shot by US Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Saturday has been identified by his family as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse at the US Department of Veterans Affairs and an American citizen.

The incident occurred amid heightened tensions between immigration officers and members of the public protesting the deployment of federal agents in the city.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) said it was “deeply disturbed and saddened” by Pretti’s death. “ANA condemns violence in our communities,” the group said, adding that the seriousness of this incident and others necessitates  transparency and accountability and calling for an “unencumbered investigation.”

Dimitri Drekonja, chief of infectious diseases at the veterans’ hospital who worked with Pretti, described him as a “super nice” person who “wanted to help people.”

Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino said Pretti approached an officer with a handgun as agents were carrying out an operation to detain an unrelated illegal migrant. Bovino stated that officers fired “defensive shots” at Pretti after he “violently resisted” attempts to disarm him.

The incident took place two weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis, sparking further protests. The Department of Homeland Security alleged that the lesbian woman had attempted to ram officers with her car, while local officials and activists rejected that account and said the shooting was entirely unjustified.
