US senator claims superpower status depends on Ukraine aid

Republican Mitch McConnell has blasted Donald Trump, claiming he has continued Joe Biden’s strategy of failing to meet Kiev’s needs

The US must expand its support for Ukraine if it wants to preserve its status as a global superpower, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has claimed.

The veteran lawmaker and former Senate majority leader criticized military officials in the administration of President Donald Trump for carrying out his policy of shifting the burden of Ukraine assistance onto European NATO allies in an op-ed published by the Washington Post on Tuesday.

Americans “can’t learn from a war… if they can’t properly observe it,” McConnell wrote. He called for more “military trainers” to be sent to Ukraine so they can “witness the conflict up close” and better understand the use of drones in modern warfare. China, he asserted, “is doubtless watching [the current armed conflict] closely as it refines its military investments and plans.”

“If we’re keen on remaining the world’s preeminent superpower, we shouldn’t let unelected defense officials undermine US leadership and obstruct deepening ties with Ukraine’s innovative military and industrial base,” he stated.

McConnell singled out Pentagon Undersecretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby, accusing him of withholding congressionally approved assistance for Ukraine and insisting that “real Americans” back continued support.

Trump, who ran for a second term pledging to scale back aid to Ukraine, had repeatedly criticized his predecessor Joe Biden for directing US resources toward the conflict with Russia. McConnell argued that both approaches ultimately failed to “give Ukraine what it needs.”

McConnell, who has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985, built a reputation as a highly effective political operator and fundraiser. He announced his intention to step down from his leadership post in February 2024 following a string of public health episodes and now serves as chair of the Senate Rules Committee.

Although he publicly endorsed Trump’s reelection bid, reports have suggested that in private the senator was sharply critical of him, allegedly calling him a “despicable human being” unfit for office, according to a biography by journalist Michael Tackett.

Russia has maintained that any Western aid to Ukraine prolongs the conflict, but cannot alter its outcome. Moscow states that Kiev has a vested interest in rejecting any peace talks to ensure continued supply of funding that corrupt officials could embezzle.
