The former president has slammed conservatives while claiming that the US is more divided than ever

Former US President Joe Biden has accused Donald Trump’s supporters of having “no hearts,” while claiming that America has “never been this divided.” Biden himself was frequently accused by conservatives of demonizing his political opponents and inciting divisions during his four years in office.

Biden hit out at his successor on Tuesday in his first public speech since leaving the White House, alleging that Trump has inflicted a “breathtaking” amount of damage on federal programs through extensive cuts.

“They’ve taken a hatchet in Social Security, pushing additional 7,000 employees, 7,000 out the door in that time, including the most seasoned career officials. Now they’re getting ready to push something more out the door,” Biden stated.

The former president, who served between 2020 and 2024, went on to demean Trump’s supporters, arguing that the US has “never been this divided.”

“Granted, it’s just 30%, but it’s a 30% that has no heart,” Biden said, apparently referring to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll in which almost a third of respondents approved of Trump’s attempts to address the high cost of living.

The poll also suggested that Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 43% – the lowest since his return to office in January – mainly due to his controversial tariff policies. Trump’s overall approval rating has nonetheless remained consistently stronger than it was for most of his first term, Reuters noted.

Biden’s remarks have drawn criticism from conservatives, who alleged that the Democratic Party and the former president’s policies were one of the main contributing factors to divisions in American society.

The Trump administration’s official Social Security account on X also hit back at Biden, accusing the former president of “lying to Americans.” It outlined a number of “facts” about Trump’s policies, such as his repeated promises to “protect Social Security and ensure higher-take home pay for seniors by ending taxation on Social Security benefits.”

Last month, NBC News cited anonymous sources as reporting that Biden was planning to make a political comeback and raise funds for Democrats amid the party’s declining popularity. The outlet’s latest poll showed that Democratic favorability among registered voters came in at a record low 27%.

However, Biden’s offer has been met with a lukewarm response, according to NBC. Activists and donors reportedly cited his age, 82, as well as his sudden exit from the 2024 presidential election as major drawbacks.

“Who’s going to want Joe Biden back in the game?” a major supporter of the former president told the media outlet, speaking anonymously.
