Trump reendorses Jeff Hurd in Colorado House primary

President Donald Trump is again backing Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) for reelection, he announced on social media Friday, just weeks after withdrawing his endorsement of the freshman lawmaker after he joined GOP pushback to Trump’s tariff policies.

“I will be fully supporting Jeff’s Re-Election to the House of Representatives, giving him my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Every true MAGA supporter and Republican, if they truly care about saving our Country, will do everything in their power to unify together, and defeat the Crazed Radical Left Democrats this November.”

Speaker Mike Johnson and House GOP leaders have been talking with the White House for several weeks about the race and lobbying both Trump and White House officials like deputy chief of staff James Blair to change course and back Hurd, given the competitive nature of the district, according to four people with direct knowledge of the conversations who were granted anonymity to speak freely. Hurd won his Western Colorado district by just 5 points in 2024.

Trump called Hurd in the last 24 hours to let him know about the change, according to two of the people and another person also aware of the call.

In late February, Trump pulled his initial support for Hurd and backed opponent Hope Scheppelman, blasting Hurd as a “RINO” and citing “a lack of support, in particular for the unbelievably successful TARIFFS.”

The withdrawal of Trump’s initial endorsement came as the White House reeled from a Supreme Court decision that struck down Trump’s tariffs, in which two Trump-appointed conservative justices, Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, voted to rebuke the president.

Earlier that month, Hurd joined five House Republicans and the chamber’s Democratic Caucus in backing a resolution to block Trump’s tariffs on Canada.

Scheppelman, who was running against Hurd in the Republican primary, is leaving the campaign trail to take on a job in the administration, Trump wrote.

“I’m grateful for President Trump’s support and appreciate his efforts to unify Republicans in Colorado’s Third District,” Hurd wrote on X Friday. “The President and I share the same goals: securing the border, American energy dominance, and helping working families.”
